History
of Nova House
The Selkirk Co-op on Abuse against women
Inc., later known as Nova House Inc. was incorporated on March
27, 1985. Our beginning was humble, we worked out of a small office
on Manitoba Avenue. We quickly realized that this small space
was not big enough, did not provide confidentiality for our women,
and made it difficult to operate a crisis line. Our next move
was to Main street where we were able to rent space for individual
and group counseling and operate the volunteer run crisis line.
The Selkirk Cooperative
on Abuse Against Women began to pursue the acquisition of a facility
that would allow for the provision of residential services. A
house was purchased for $1, and with the cooperation of Manitoba
Housing Nova House was opened on March 15, 1987. As the need for
services increased we needed more space for non-residential services,
groups, and counseling. In October of 1994 we moved to our current
facility in Selkirk, MB.
Today, we have a 14 bed facility
and manage two interim housing units in the Interlake Region that
provide housing for women when they leave the shelter.
